The Semmering Train Line,
a World Cultural Heritage
The Semmering Train Line is over 150 years old. But not
only its age distinguishes the train line of 41 kilometres in length
from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag: 1854 it was the World's first mountain
railway line and 1998 it was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
Already in its heydays the Semmering Train Line was considered a "harmonious combination of technology and nature". In an impressing and
fascinating way it meanders past steep rock faces, crosses bridges
and viaduct, disappears again and again in one of the 15 tunnels and offers
fantastic views of the region around Semmering.
