Sonnwendstein

Panorama walk Sonnwendstein

The circular walk starts at the lower terminus of the former lift to Sonnwendstein in Maria Schutz.

Tour description:
The ascent leads over the Gebirgsjägersteig to the north face of Sonnwendstein. After approximately 2 hours you reach the Pollereshütte and after further 5 minutes the summit of Sonnwendstein (1523 metres). From here there is a stunning view to Rax and Schneeberg as well as on to the historical Ghega-Semmering train tracks. In the Pollereshütte we enjoy delicious home-made dishes such as Kaspressknödel (cheesy dumplings), Blunzengröstl (roasted black pudding) or Specklinsen (lentils with bacon).

Rested and recovered our way leads on to the Erzkogel mountain cross (1504 metres). This is where the Hochalmweg begins. Crossing the alpine pasture we can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view on to the highest mountains of Lower Austria, Stuhleck as well as a magnificent view back to Sonnwendstein. After an hour we reach the Liechtensteinhaus (1340 metres) but we continue straight away on to the millennium observatory, which at 1350 metres above sea level towers another 30 metres above the mountain and offers the "most beautiful panorama of the magic mountains wonder world"
From here the descend over the winter toboggan run to the Semmering-Passhöhe. A beautiful wooden path gradually descends to the lower terminus of the lift to Sonnwendstein leading us back to Maria Schutz.

Length of the route: about 13 kilometres
Total altitude: about 950 metres
Duration of the walk: about 5 ½ hours
